Greater Rochester Healthy Childcare 2010

Child Care Council, and partners Children's Institute and Rochester Childfirst Network, has been awarded a three year grant to implement  two health promotion interventions targeted at reducing childhood obesity through the promotion of good nutrition practices and physical activity in child care programs throughout Monroe County.

Eat Well Play Hard in Child Care Settings Enhanced:
In  Child Care Centers, Child Care Council's Registered Dietitian will provide an expanded Eat Well Play Hard intervention to Child Care Centers that also includes training in the Team Nutrition curriculum which focuses on improving nutrition and physical activity policies at the center.  This intervention also includes a prolonged period of support and technical assistance to the child care center staff and parents of children attending the program.

Hip Hop to Health Jr:
In Family and Group Family Child Care, Child Care Council will offer the Hip Hop to Health Jr. program to child care providers who already participate in the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP).  Hip Hop to Health Jr. was developed at University Of Chicago where the program was shown to positively effect the maintenance of healthy weight in pre-school children who attended participating Head Start programs.  The Hip Hop to Health Jr. program will teach children ages 2-5 years how to make smart choices about eating and promotes physical activity in the family child care home.

Eat Well Play Hard in Child Care Settings:

Thanks to New York State Department of Health, Child Care Council has received a second year of funding and expanded territory to implement Eat Well Play Hard in Child Care Settings in 10 counties in Western New York.  Child Care Council provides the services of two Registered Dietitians to provide training to children, parents, and child care center staff  on healthy foods and eating practices and fun activities to promote regular exercise for children 3 to 5 years old.

SPARK PE Early Childhood and School-Age:
The Rochester Area Community Foundation Wayne County Endowment has funded Child Care Council to implement a second year and expanded program to provide the SPARK Physical Education curriculum to child care programs in Wayne County that have not received obesity prevention programming through other venues.
