Professional Development

Training Requirements:

Child care providers and staff working in a licensed or registered day care program are required to receive 30 hours of training every two years, and the training must cover the nine topics outlined by the NYS Office of Children & Family Services (see below).

Additionally, Health & Safety Training is required for all Family and Group Family child care programs. This 15-hour class must be passed in order to receive a license or registration.

NYS Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS Area)

1. Principles of childhood development: appropriate supervision of children, meeting the needs of children enrolled with physical or emotional challenges, and behavior management and discipline
2. Nutrition and health needs of children
3. Child day care program development
4. Safety and security procedures including communication between parents and staff
5. Business records maintenance and management
6. Child abuse and maltreatment identification and prevention
7. Statutes and regulations pertaining to child day care
8. Statutes and regulations pertaining to child abuse and maltreatment
9. Identification, diagnosis, and prevention of Shaken Baby Syndrome

Funding for this site is sponsored by the New York State Office of Children and Family Services, funded by the federal Child Care and Development Fund and administered by the Professional Development Program, Rockefeller College, University at Albany. These online trainings are available for all child care providers in New York State at no cost to participants.

The objective of these trainings is to provide every New York State child care provider with a place to meet their required training hours. Each child care provider must complete at least 15 hours of training during the first six months of registration and at least 30 hours of training every 2 years.
